The Care Our Veterans Have Earned — Right Next to the VA

Ivory Crest Care is located in Loma Linda, California — home to the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, one of the largest VA medical centers in the country. For veterans who receive ongoing VA medical care, our location means their doctors, specialists, and support network are never more than minutes away.

We are a California DSS-licensed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) with a maximum of 6 residents. For veterans accustomed to the bonds of close community, our intimate home environment feels familiar — a small, tight-knit group where every person is known, valued, and cared for.

We accept VA Aid & Attendance benefits and work closely with families to ensure veterans receive every dollar of support they have earned through their service.

Veterans with service-connected respiratory conditions — including exposure-related lung disease, sleep apnea, and COPD — benefit from an additional layer of oversight at Ivory Crest Care. Our owner and administrator is a California-licensed Respiratory Therapist who understands these conditions clinically. We communicate proactively with VA physicians and flag changes in residents' respiratory status with the language and knowledge that medical teams expect.

VA Aid & Attendance Benefits Welcomed

Understanding Your Benefits

What Is VA Aid & Attendance — and How Much Can It Pay?

Aid & Attendance is a VA pension benefit that provides monthly, tax-free financial support to qualifying wartime veterans and their surviving spouses. It is one of the most valuable — and most underutilized — benefits available to aging veterans. Many families don't know it exists until they're already searching for care.

2026 Aid & Attendance Maximum Monthly Benefits

$2,424/month

Single Veteran

$2,874/month

Married Veteran

$1,653/month

Surviving Spouse

Tax-free. Can be used directly toward assisted living costs. Amounts based on 2026 VA rates.

Eligibility

Does Your Veteran Qualify for Aid & Attendance?

01

Military Service Requirement

  • Served at least 90 days of active duty
  • At least 1 day during a wartime period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War)
  • Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
  • National Guard and Reserve may qualify if activated under federal orders

02

Health & Care Requirement — Must meet ONE

  • Needs assistance with 2 or more Activities of Daily Living (bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, toileting)
  • Has dementia, Alzheimer's, or cognitive impairment requiring a protected environment
  • Is legally blind (5/200 vision or less)
  • Is bedridden or spends most of the day in bed due to disability
  • Resides in an assisted living facility or care home

03

Financial Requirement (2026)

  • Net worth must not exceed $163,698
  • Net worth = assets + annual income minus unreimbursed medical expenses
  • Unreimbursed care costs (like assisted living fees) can reduce countable income significantly — many veterans who think they don't qualify actually do
  • 36-month look-back period applies to asset transfers

The Application Process

How to Apply for VA Aid & Attendance Benefits

  1. Step 1 — Gather Documents

Collect: DD-214 (proof of military service), recent medical records documenting care needs, physician's statement of need (VA Form 21-2680 completed by doctor), financial records (assets, income, monthly expenses), marriage certificate or death certificate if surviving spouse.

  2. Step 2 — Submit Your Application

File VA Form 21P-527EZ (Veterans Pension) online at va.gov or by mail to the VA Pension Intake Center. For the physician evaluation form (21-2680), your VA Loma Linda doctor or primary care physician can complete this — we can help coordinate.

  3. Step 3 — Start Care While You Wait

VA benefit processing takes 3–6 months on average. You do not have to wait for approval to move in. Many families begin care at Ivory Crest Care while the application is pending, then apply Aid & Attendance payments retroactively once approved.

Important: The VA does not pay Ivory Crest Care directly. Aid & Attendance is paid directly to the veteran or surviving spouse as a monthly pension check, which is then used to pay for care. We work with families to make this transition smooth.

Maximizing Your Benefits

VA Benefits Can Work Alongside Other Payment Sources

Private Pay + Aid & Attendance

The most common combination. Your family pays the monthly care rate, and Aid & Attendance supplements up to $2,424–$2,874/month — significantly reducing out-of-pocket costs.

Medi-Cal ALW + VA Pension

In some cases, veterans may be eligible for both Medi-Cal's Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) program and a VA basic pension simultaneously. We help families explore both pathways.

IEHP + VA Benefits

Veterans enrolled in IEHP (Inland Empire Health Plan) through Medi-Cal may qualify for additional covered services while also receiving Aid & Attendance. Our team can help families navigate both programs.

Benefit eligibility and combinations vary by individual circumstance. We recommend consulting with a VA-accredited claims agent or VSO for personalized guidance. Ivory Crest Care does not provide legal or financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions — VA Benefits & Assisted Living in Loma Linda, CA

Does Ivory Crest Care accept VA benefits?

We welcome veterans who use VA Aid & Attendance pension benefits. The VA pays the veteran directly, and those funds are used toward our monthly care rate. We work closely with families to make this process straightforward.

How close is Ivory Crest Care to the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System?

We are located in Loma Linda, CA — minutes from the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System at 11201 Benton Street. Veterans can easily maintain their existing VA care relationships while living with us.

What is the difference between VA Aid & Attendance and VA disability compensation?

Aid & Attendance is a pension benefit for veterans who need help with daily living. VA disability compensation is for service-connected injuries or conditions. A veteran cannot receive both pension and compensation simultaneously — they receive whichever is higher. Both can potentially be used toward assisted living costs.

Can a surviving spouse of a veteran qualify for benefits?

Yes. Surviving spouses of wartime veterans may qualify for the VA Survivors Pension and Aid & Attendance benefit, up to $1,653/month in 2026. The veteran must have served during a wartime period and been discharged honorably.

How long does it take to get Aid & Attendance approved?

The VA typically takes 3–6 months to process Aid & Attendance applications. Veterans do not need to wait for approval to begin care. Once approved, benefits may be paid retroactively to the date of application.

What wartime periods qualify for VA pension benefits?

World War II (Dec 7, 1941 – Dec 31, 1946), Korean War (June 27, 1950 – Jan 31, 1955), Vietnam War (Aug 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975 for most veterans), Gulf War (Aug 2, 1990 – present, ongoing).

Can veterans use Aid & Attendance alongside Medi-Cal?

In some cases, yes — though benefit interactions are complex and depend on individual circumstances. We recommend consulting with a VA-accredited claims agent or the California Department of Veterans Affairs for guidance specific to your situation.

Does Ivory Crest Care help with the VA benefits application process?

We are not VA-accredited claims agents and cannot file on your behalf, but we can help your family understand the process, connect you with free VSO resources, and coordinate with your VA physician for the required medical evaluation forms.
